English version : United States: history of prosperity and mythe
The American Dream or how prosperity and myth-making concerning the United States became interwoven from the era of mass emigration 1800-1920:
“To satisfy his wanderlust he (the American) has more and more money to spare and he therefore desires soft carpets and to walk in beautifully furnished rooms. At home the farmer is satisfied with simple food and wears coarse clothing, but as soon as he goes on a journey he is dressed in the latest fashion and behaves like a nobleman. Whom he far surpasses in neatness in food and drink, and also makes much more demands than this one
De Tijd 1870
“America leads the world in the speed, comfort and luxury of her railroad service, and there is now an unbroken connection of comfortable steamer and comfortable car right around the globe with European or American hotels at every junction” Lilan Leland 1890 (during her world trip)
